Elastomer Performance with Temperature
HD process provide a range of elastomers for various equipment. This URL is to show some examples of a working application (in this case seals and butterfly valves).
The diagram here shows elastomer performance for across a range of temperatures for butterfly valve seals comparing silicon, VITON, nitrile, EPDM.
In this case the chart tracks how various elastomers retain their seating position as temperature increases (or decreases) - with e.g
HIGHER TEMPS. - Both VITON and silicon having good temperature resistance up to 140° C with nitrile and EPDM retaining some strength to around 90 to 100 C.
COLDER TEMPS - EPDM and silicon have good resistance down to -5C. Nitrile is also relatively good down to 5C
- NOTE that the above is for seating of a seal within a butterfly valve (impacted by changing elasticity amongst other factors) - the resistance to breaking/ failure for these elastomers will be significantly greater than indicated.
